Corpse Party: Book Of Shadows

Corpse Party: Book Of Shadows
The perfect reimagining sequal hybrid.

Part 1: Overview

Corpse Party: Book Of Shadows is a survival horror adventure and visual novel video game co-developed by Team GrisGris and MAGES and published by 5pb. The game is a fresh take of the Corpse Party games, being a point and click adventure visual novel rather than one where you walk around. This style of game allows to show the visuals a lot more HD rather than the usual 16-bit graphics.

Part 2: Story

The game's place in the timeline is sort of odd and can be confusing so I shall clarify. Corpse Party: Book Of Shadows for chapters 1 to 7 is a continuation of one of the Wrong Ends in Corpse Party: Blood Covered. In that Wrong End, they initiate a loop where they all go back in time before entering Heavenly Host with erased memories before innevitably ending up there again and repeat. However, the secret chapter 8 is a sequal to the actual true ending of Corpse Party: Blood Covered.

The plot follows Naomi at first, reliving the day she had before entering Heavenly Host with only a minor case of Deja Vu. Satoshi is the first person to realise something is very wrong but is unsuccesful in stopping the group from performing the charm, all of the characters soon returning to Heavenly Host to relive that nightmare.

After returning to Heavenly Host, Naomi realises this has happened before, and tries to change the outcomes of their previously deceased friends, however, little does she know that every character that died the first time is destined to die again, no matter what. As such, every character meets their fate again, in new and different ways.

The main difference between this game and the last is that this game allows for the characters to have many more interactions, both inside and outside of Heavenly Host, that allows us to learn more about the characters and see how they would usually act in their normal lives.

As for the hidden chapter, it revolves around Ayumi and Naomi, two of the survivers of Heavenly Host, going to Yoshie Shinozaki's abandoned home in order to locate the Book Of Shadows in an effort to try and resurect their fallen friends through dark magic.

Part 3: Gameplay

The gameplay of Corpse Party: Book Of Shadows mainly consists of moving to different locations and then searching around those locations for items to collect or interact with in order to progress such as having to pull a lever in order to open a new path or collecting a floorboard to place over a hole.

Like other Corpse Party games, there are numerous Wrong Ends that can be encountered throughout the game, where you perform an action that causes things to go wrong, usually resulting in the player character's untimely demise.

Futhermore, there is a new feature that had only ever been part of the narrative previously known as the 'Darkening', in this game, the more times you look at things that are quite horrific or despair enducing, it'll cause the 'Darkening' metre to raise up, if it reaches all the way to the top, then you immediately lose, resulting in a Wrong End.

Part 4: Conclusion

In conclusion, Corpse Party Book Of Shadows is the perfect blend of reimagining an old story whilst also making sure things stay new and exciting, offering up fresh character moments, a familiar narrative with new twists and the classic gory experience Corpse Party is known for.

I would give Corpse Party: Book Of Shadows a 7/10.
