Your Turn To Die - Death Game By Majority -

Your Turn To Die
The Rise of the Indie Death Game.

Part 1: Overview

Your Turn To Die is a psychological horror puzzle and adventure game created by Nankidai, a recognised manga artist. The game is a visual novel representation of the classic 'Death Game' scenario seen in games like Danganronpa and Zero Escape. The game is an episodic game that has been released in parts, currently everything but the second part of the final chapter has been released and it has grown immensely in popularity both in Japan and in the west through the translation on VGPersons.com. It has a large community of deadicated fans who love the games and create fanart and fanfictions based on the characters and story. It has done a wonderful job at making a name for itself.

Part 2: Story

The story follows Sara Chidouin, after walking home with her best friend Joe, she and him have an encounter that involves Sara's stalker, causing the two of them to sprint back to her house. Once home, Sara goes inside only to find her mom has collapsed, Joe quickly begins to call the police whilst Sara investigates upstairs, however, as soon as Sara wanders into her bedroom, she is quickly kidnapped.

Once Sara awakens, she finds herself locked up in a large facility which is where the game is set for the rest of the game. In this place, she meets various other people who've been kidnapped just like her, including her best friend Joe, whom she wakes up with. The 12 people trapped in the facility are forced to participate in a Death Game, this is where the game will begin to sound like the games mentioned earlier.

There are various plot twists, character moments and various other important plot points scattered throughout this game which makes it a thrill to read and play through. It is also known for it's hearbreaking scenes that come up later in the game, which have moved many players alike to tears.

Part 3: Gameplay

The gameplay per chapter is split into two sections that correspond to the story. The first section can vary, though it usually involves walking around the given location, picking up items, solving puzzles and talking to characters. This first section often has a unique gimmick paired along with it each chapter, for example in Chapter 2, during this section of the game you have to play lots of different small mini games in order to earn tokens.

The second section of each chapter is always the same, and is also what the game is most known for, the understandably named 'Main Game'. During the main game, characters have to go through several votes to decide which of them will die, however it isn't as simple as voting for the weakest link. During the first section, the characters will acquire various cards that will determine their role for the main game. The Commoner, The Sage, The Keymaster and The Sacrifice.

The Commoner: This card holds no special rule or ability.

The Keymaster: If the Keymaster recieves the majority vote, then everyone will die.

The Sage: The sage knows who the Keymaster is and cannot lie about who it is, however, revealing who the Keymaster is puts them in danger, since voting for the sage is a safe move.

The Sacrifice: The character who holds the sacrifice card will die unless they recieve majority vote. If they recieve majority vote they, and one person of their choosing, will survive whilst everyone else will die.

These cards are the main reason behind the long discussions that are held in the Main Game before each vote. First their is the preliminary vote, which selects about half of the players who will subsequently move on to the next round, it is then where the final vote is held where everyone must select someone from the people selected in the preliminary round to be killed.

The 'Main Game's' disccusions often revolve around what happened in section one, different lies characters have said and this is often where many of the game's big plot twists will take place, which leave many of players shocked by the outcomes.

During the main game, the player has several different things they can try to attempt at moving discussions forward. They can [EXTRACT] statements from each character, they can [CONFLICT] different character's statements against each other, they can use [ITEM]s on different characters to try to prevoke a response and you can also view character's [REACTION]s to certain statements. Sometimes the Main Game will involve an extra mechanic such as [SORT OUT], where you'd have to sort out something that had been shown within the discussions.

These sections are often quite difficult and many players often struggle figuring out how to progress, however it all feels worth it as the pay off after all that effort is always incredibly rewarding, learning different things and making exciting revelations, this is what the game is all about.

After every Main Game, two characters will die, either by majority vote, or by holding the Sacrifice Card. However, who will die isn't always the same, different players can experience different characters dying, as this game does have multiple endings. Remember those tokens in part A of Chapter 2, for example? Giving too many tokens to one of the character's can trigger a bad ending. Different deicisions don't always result in a bad ending however, it is possible for two different characters to die as a result of Chapter 2's Main Game, however the game will continue on with whichever character survives, which creates an interesting dymnamic and gives the game significant replay value.
